Android design support library - CollapsingToolbarLayout EnterAlwaysCollapsed

1.7k Views Asked by At

I am trying to implement a CollapsingToolBarLayout similar to the one present in the Cheesesquare demo app.
However, I need my Toolbar to be collapsed by default when I enter the Activity (That way it does not take too much space in landscape mode on phones).
According to the documentation, It seems easily doable with the EnterAlwaysCollapsed flag.
However, I do not obtain the desired behavior. Instead, the AppBarLayout appears fully extended at first and scrolls out of the screen, leaving only the system bar.

Here is my layout (a slight modification of cheesecake) :

<android.support.design.widget.AppBarLayout
    android:id="@+id/appbar"
    android:layout_width="match_parent"
    android:layout_height="@dimen/detail_backdrop_height"
    android:theme="@style/ThemeOverlay.AppCompat.Dark.ActionBar"
    android:fitsSystemWindows="true">

    <android.support.design.widget.CollapsingToolbarLayout
        android:id="@+id/collapsing_toolbar"
        android:layout_width="match_parent"
        android:layout_height="match_parent"
        app:layout_scrollFlags="scroll|enterAlwaysCollapsed"
        android:fitsSystemWindows="true"
        android:minHeight="?attr/actionBarSize"
        app:contentScrim="?attr/colorPrimary"
        app:expandedTitleMarginStart="48dp"
        app:expandedTitleMarginEnd="64dp">

        <ImageView
            android:id="@+id/backdrop"
            android:layout_width="match_parent"

Actually, EnterAlwaysCollapse only targets the apparition animation of this view. It is different from what I am trying to do.
There is an issue on the google tracker asking to add the possibility to set the initial state of the CollapsingToolBarLayout.

Well, it might be late, but just in case anyone struggles with it. Support design library v23 supports that. You should add app:expanded="false" to your AppBarLayout in xml.

So it should look something like this:

<android.support.design.widget.AppBarLayout
android:id="@+id/appbar"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="@dimen/detail_backdrop_height"
android:theme="@style/ThemeOverlay.AppCompat.Dark.ActionBar"
android:fitsSystemWindows="true"
app:expanded="false">

You can also do it programmatically with calling setExpanded(boolean) on your AppBarLayout.
