Cassandra 3.11 UDF operating system stack overflow

I'm using Cassandra 3.11 on RHEL. I defined a UDF exactly as described here.

CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION maxOf(current int, testvalue int) 
CALLED ON NULL INPUT 
RETURNS int
LANGUAGE java 
AS $$return Math.max(current,testvalue);$$;

I'm able to create the UDF. But when I run the following query:

SELECT id,val1,val2,maxOf(val1,val2) FROM test WHERE id IN(1,2,3);

I get the following error:

com.datastax.driver.core.exceptions.FunctionExecutionException: execution of 'srm.maxof[int, int]'
failed: java.lang.RuntimeException: java.lang.StackOverflowError: operating system stack overflow

I have already set enable_user_defined_functions: true in cassandra.yaml on all nodes.

Here's a snippet from system.log that includes JVM -X parameters:

This only happens when using the IBM JRE. Works fine with the Oracle JRE.

Is there some configuration I'm missing? Do I need to increase some stack size parameter?

UDFs are by default disabled since Cassandra 3.0. To enable them, you need to set enable_user_defined_functions: true in cassandra.yaml file.
